What Is AGI?

Artificial general intelligence, what the term actually means, and why the timing debate matters.

The term

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) usually means an AI system that can match or exceed human performance across most economically valuable cognitive tasks. There is no single agreed-upon definition.

Why it matters

If or when AGI arrives, it would change labor markets, scientific research, defense, and political power in ways that are hard to predict. Even disagreement about the timeline shapes today's policy choices — particularly around safety testing and compute regulation.

Where the debate stands

Forecasts among researchers range from "within a few years" to "many decades or never." Public companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind have all stated AGI as a corporate goal.
